Dr. Sheila Mutuma, is a Scholar, researcher (Gender Specialist) and a participant trainer. She holds a PhD in Gender and Development Studies and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Gender and Development Studies (Gender Section) at Kenyatta University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Sheila’s research specialization includes gender analysis, gender mainstreaming, Gender Responsive Budgeting, and the development of gender-responsive practices and policies at the institutional, community, and program levels. Over time, she has undertaken various gender-related trainings, gender responsive research and consultancies funded by different local and global organizations.  She is currently actively engaged in the following projects: Download Full CV

Conferences /Seminars/Workshops

  • 22–26 June 2026: Attended the Staff Training Week at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. The programme was designed and hosted by expert teams across Freie Universität Berlin and focused on promoting and advancing gender and diversity in research and teaching through innovative approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • 13th March 2026: Organized a Departmental Academic forum to mark the International Women’s Day-2026: Theme;” Women's Rights and Access to Justice” Virtual.
  • 20th November 2025: Attended the Karatina University and Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Workshop on the theme "Strengthening Research Capacity: Grant Writing and Scholarly Productivity", held at Karatina University.
  • 1st and 2nd July 2025: Facilitated an INCITIS Food Training for Onboarders Focusing on Gender, Aguaponics, Hydroponics and Insect –rearing initiatives. Kenyatta University.
  • 5th –6th August 2025: Participated in the International Conference jointly organized by Karatina University and the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program on the theme "Gender, Media and Communication in 21st Century Africa" (Virtual).
  • 21st–23rd May 2025: Participated in the Review and Advocacy of the Women's Empowerment Report Workshop, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Merica Hotel, Nakuru County.
  • 12th March 2025: Attended the Virtual Round Table Discussion to mark International Women's Day on the theme "Accelerating Action", organized by the KU-WEE Hub/Department.
  • 19th–20th February 2025: Participated in the South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc Advocacy Workshop, held at A&L Hotel, Machakos. Presented a paper titled "Women's Participation in Management and Leadership Positions in the Public Sector in Kenya: Closing the Gender Gap."
  • 3rd April 2025: Coordinator and Session Chair, Gender Inclusion, Mainstreaming and Affirmative Action Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop, Tharaka Nithi County, JJ Place, Chuka.
